DESIGN NOTES
In 2007 we launched Black Dog Cycle Works with the KTM 950/990 Adventure skid plate. It was with the idea that we could design and manufacture a superior product to anything that was currently on the market and that we would be able to make it right here in America. Our entire design philosophy started with this plate. First we own the bike, then we evaluate the bike and its vulnerabilities and then we form a design to provide the maximum protection we can. This plate was designed to cover more of the critically exposed lower front end of the 950/990 adventure. This added protection is vital to protect the sensitive components located at the bottom of the engine, the engine case, clutch cover and ignition cover. Also includes integrated side-stand switch protection. For added protection of your case you need to look at the BDCW side stand relocation kit.
Over the years several companies have copied our design. Don't accept imitations—only the original Black Dog skid plate offers MAXIMUM protection to your KTM! This design has enhanced side stand protection as well as thicker material in the front and rear mounting tabs, making the strongest skid plate on the market EVEN STRONGER! In addition, all skid plates include a “Shok-Blok” to help absorb those really BIG hits and to protect the mounting points.

Larger dimensions and stouter construction means your $8,000+ engine has max protection. Plus, it fully protects the clutch, ignition cover, header pipes and catalytic converter—most other brands don’t. Many riders don’t realize a replacement header pipe alone costs $1800 (+ labor).

You get what you pay for. And we found the optimal material to protect, perform, and last. In fact, it could outlive your bike. The grade of aluminum we selected is designed to ABSORB impacts, not transfer the force to the mounting points on the bike, which can happen with thicker or harder grades of aluminum such as 6061.
